FINDING THE RIGHT LAWYER

If you think that you need a lawyer, first ask yourself, "What type of legal problem do I have?" No lawyer is an expert in every field of law, and many have chosen to limit their practice only to a few practice areas. It's important when you choose a lawyer to find one which works within these areas of law on a normal bases.

A good way to find a lawyer is through a Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS) like the one operated by the Knoxville Bar Association. You can contact LRIS at 522-7501. Their hours are Monday- Thursday , 9 a.m.-12 noon and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. On Friday's the Service will close at 3 p.m. You can also make a request for a referral by logging onto their website at www.knoxbar.org. The consultation time with the attorney is FREE.

When you contact the Lawyer Referral & Information Service , please remember that the person you speak to cannot give you legal advice over the telephone or at the office, because he or she is not a lawyer. Instead, they will explain that you have the following two options.

Option #1 The LRIS will be arrange for you a FREE 30-minute in-office consultation with an attorney who practices in the area of law in which you have a concern. The LRIS staff will schedule the in-office visit for you and confirm the date , time and place of the appointment upon your initial call. You will need to be prepared to use your time wisely and take with you any legal documents that apply to your situation, also prepare your questions in advance to make sure you cover all your concerns.

Option #2 If you prefer you may request a FREE phone consultation with an attorney in order to discuss your legal issue. The Lawyer Referral & Information Service will supply you with the name(s) and phone numbers of up to two attorneys who handle cases in the area of law in which you have a concern. You can then contact each of these attorneys directly for a brief phone consultation

No matter which option you choose the consultation with the attorney is FREE. The consultation will help you determine whether you need to hire a lawyer, how long it will take to resolve your legal matter, and how much the attorney will charge for his/her fees past the consultation

The Lawyer Referral & Information Service also offers a Speakers Bureau which will provide an attorney for your business, group or organization and who will speak on a legal topic of your choice. The Lawyer Referral & Information Service is a public service of the Knoxville Bar Association. LRIS meets the standards set by the Tennessee Supreme Court for Intermediary Organizations. .
