So, You Want to Be an Entrepreneur

First, attend this workshop to see if you have what it takes

Are you thinking about starting a business? SCORE is offering a free workshop on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. The workshop is from 10:30 to 11:30 and is held at Office Suites Plus in Knoxville at 200 Prosperity Drive. This workshop is limited to the first 10 registrants so all must pre-register before attendance. Register or call with questions at the Greater Knoxville SCORE office at (865-692-0717). See directions to Office Suites Plus below.

If you are starting a business, make sure you're cut out for it first. In this bleak economy, lots of people are contemplating striking out on their own -- whether they're frustrated job seekers or people who are already employed but getting antsy about their company's prospects.

For some people, entrepreneurship is the best option around, a way to build wealth and do something you love without answering to somebody else. But it's also a huge financial gamble -- and some people, unfortunately, will discover too late that it's not the right fit for them. Building a successful business can take years filled with setbacks, long hours and little reward. Certain personalities thrive on the challenge and embrace the sacrifices. But it can be a hard switch for someone who has been sitting in a cubicle with a steady paycheck.

So, how can you figure out whether you're suited for self-employment?

This workshop outlines specific things a prospective entrepreneur needs to do prior to any personal commitment or financial investment in a business whether it is a start up or acquisition of an existing business. The first item on this list of things to do is a thorough self-assessment via a check list provided at the workshop.

Guidance include many ideas such as:

  • A template for evaluating start up costs

  • Financial analysis

  • Business definition including legal structure and regulation

  • Concept of market research to determine if there is a market

  • Reasons and necessity for a Business Plan for entrepreneurs
